Character AI alternatives for long-form memory

Memory matters only when it serves a scene you can inspect. Instead of asking which product has “the best” memory, run the same small trial in each product and record what happens. Product features and policies can change, so verify the linked official pages before you decide.
Start with one fixed character brief
Use the same fictional character, relationship framing, setting, and five facts in each trial. For example: Mira is a museum conservator; she dislikes loud parties; she is restoring a blue map; the scene is set in Lisbon; she promised to call her sister on Friday. Keep the facts ordinary, specific, and non-sensitive.
Do not treat a warm first answer as evidence of long-term recall. Your goal is to observe how a conversation retains, repairs, and exposes context. Write the five facts down somewhere outside the chat window before you begin. A trial only tells you something if you can compare the character’s answer against a fixed record rather than your memory of what you typed.
Run this six-part trial
- Fixed facts. State the five facts naturally in a short opening scene. Save a transcript or notes outside the product if you want a reliable record.
- Delayed recall. Continue for at least several turns on an unrelated subject, then ask about one fact without repeating it.
- Contradiction recovery. Deliberately state one conflicting detail, then ask the character to reconcile the mismatch. Note whether it acknowledges uncertainty rather than inventing confidence.
- Long-scene continuity. Move through a short sequence: arrival, obstacle, decision, and aftermath. Check whether names, goals, and the physical setting remain coherent.
- User controls. Locate visible memory, profile, pinning, deletion, or customization controls. Record what you can review or edit yourself.
- Policy check. Read the current privacy page and write down what it says about conversation data, improvement, deletion, and regional choices.
Repeat each step from a fresh chat as well as a continuing one. A result from a single conversation is a product observation, not an independent benchmark. If a product gives you a way to correct a wrong detail, use it during the trial rather than after, then repeat the delayed-recall step to see whether the correction actually changed the next answer or only appeared to.

These are documented product surfaces, not quality scores. Character.AI’s pin limit is a published product detail; it does not establish how well a whole scene will be understood. Replika’s description of memory layers is likewise not a measured continuity result. Nomi’s memory language is vendor marketing and should be tested.
For Charmi, review memory behavior inside the product during the trial. The policy displayed on the product site says it collects account/profile data, messages, and user-created content, and describes an opt-out route through support; read the current policy for its precise wording and limits.
What we observed
We read Charmi’s memory system directly rather than describing it from marketing copy. Each stored memory record carries a display text, a category, the source turn IDs it was extracted from, a confidence value, a locale, timestamps, and a state. The categories are identity, preference, relationship, event, boundary, and promise. A memory moves through four states: proposed, accepted, corrected, and deleted. Only memories in the accepted or corrected state are placed into the character’s prompt; a proposed memory is held for the user to review first rather than acting on it silently.
When memories are assembled into the prompt, they are ranked category-first — boundary, then promise, identity, relationship, preference, event — and only within a category are they ordered by lexical relevance to the recent turns, then confidence, then recency. How much gets retrieved is bounded by the user’s plan tier and a token budget, though inspecting or deleting a memory is never limited by plan. Extraction itself runs only after a turn completes, not mid-stream, and is keyed by turn ID so a retried request cannot duplicate an entry. If you correct a memory’s wording in the memory sheet, that correction becomes authoritative for the very next message, with no reload needed — a concrete point to test for yourself rather than take on faith. After extraction, the chat surfaces one quiet “remembered” notice with a Review action, rather than an unlabeled change to behavior.
Decide from evidence, not a claim
Choose the product whose controls, policy, and observed behavior fit your purpose. If a character misses a detail, test whether a clear correction restores the scene. If you cannot find an important control or policy answer, treat that as meaningful information rather than filling the gap with an assumption. In short: compare a documented surface, then compare your own repeatable trial. That approach is more durable than a ranking when character products change.
